Origin
The rug is handwoven by tribal craftsmen in Afghanistan, making this kneeling posture revered as the Kazak tradition. It was inspired by the designs of the South Caucasus with themes that were used historically by the nomads to ward off evil and bring prosperity. All the pieces are silent about traditions in terms of color and symmetry.
Materials
Ghazni wool that has been woven into this rug is then dyed using vegetable-based colours into natural reds, ivories, blues, and light greens. Its hand-spun wool just balances the softness and hardiness, and the colors do wear out over time, giving a patina and experience each year.
Design
The pattern has a diamond medallion of stepped velvet, one in soft indigo and ivory, flanked by a spray and stylized vegetal designs. The symmetrical design stands on a rich ruby-red ground, and the border has bright rosettes and sharp, angled blossoms, which provide the piece with balance and structure.
Craftsmanship
It is a hand-knotted, done on antique looms with old-time techniques. The medium knot density provides structural strength along with a clear cut in design. Both clean edges and balanced pattern repeat speak to the level of artisan detail, as does hand-finished fringe. This rug will survive and can be used for decades.
Heritage
The Kazak rugs are strong and vigorous in line, and symbolic in distinction. Tribal medallions and floral guards on this rug celebrate that heritage as a reminder of old stories and meanings. Using these motifs, contemporary weavers in Afghanistan are still keepers of a tradition of artistic integrity coupled with functional beauty.
A timeless Kazak rug where bold crimson meets centuries of symbolic elegance.
