Origin
This rug is hand-woven by the deft sets of Mumlook artisans of Afghanistan; its history is one of a tradition of geometrical equilibrium and of Central-Asian symmetry. Resembling the Persian designs of the 16th century, its main medallion and cartouches that surround provide cultural referencing and historic upholstery. Each of the patterns illustrates centuries of accuracy when it comes to design and the actual execution.
Materials
This rug was hand-woven in 100% hand-spun Ghazni wool; it is dyed with all-natural botanical dyes. The wool is dense but soft, has great color permanence, and wears well. The rug is environmentally friendly and biodegradable, and proudly demonstrates a consideration of the environment (both by using materials that respect artisan traditions and exploit the geographic location, and also the modern values of eco-friendly behavior).
Design
The field is anchored with a central diamond medallion that is surrounded by octagonal cartouches and stylized flowery shapes. The patterns feature fine-line symmetry, and their borders have rosettes and latch hook designs in dark reds and indigo. The bright patterns are toned down by the earthy grey field to afford versatility to the interior designs.
Craftsmanship
Each of the three knots is hand-done with controlled tension and precise alignment. On the reverse, there are clear lines and colors and sharp changes between them, which bespeak the clarity of the weave. The rug has close selvedges and braided fringes, thus providing strength to the structure and making it always beautiful.
Heritage
The textile tradition of Mumlook is one that is based on centuries of visual narration- every medallion acting as a sign of protection, balance, and unity. These are rugs that have been handed over through generations and at various life events; they are known to be given as gifts. This article is an extension of that legacy that has provided both an enduring appeal to test and ignore heritage as well as a contribution to modern living surroundings.
An enduring expression of geometry and grace—this Mumlook rug celebrates art, history, and handmade excellence.
