Mumlook 5 x 3.3 Wool Rug – Medallion Mosaic in Burgundy & Jade

Origin

This rug has been woven in Afghanistan by Mumlook craftspeople and combines a classic Persian mathematical rigor with a Central Asian symbolism. Crafting to precision, Mumlook weavers produce designs that embrace the principle of symmetry, narratives, and balance, with every carpet holding motifs traced through long-ago cultural traditions.

Materials

The rug was handwoven in Ghazni wool (which is spun by hand) and with the help of botanical dyes, its colors appear bright and lasting. The colors are burgundy, jade, and blue natural dyes that took time to prepare. Synthetics-free, the wool is pristinely soft and supple, with great resistance to wear and tear- cultural relics intended to last with grace throughout the ages.

Design

Central is a sunburst floral medallion with eight octagonal patterns and a yellow mosaic. These elements are held on by the burgundy ground, with contrast and rhythm brought in by the use of jade, blue, and gold accents. Along borders, there are stylized rosettes and vine scrolls, which are set up in a similar amount of structure and ornament.

Craftsmanship

This rug is hand knotted with an unusually high tension and precision, with a high knot count as well as consistency of patterns on the reverse. Clear delineation, even pile, close-set selvedges are signs of the experienced hand and the ancient tool. Like a decoration and a long-lasting flooring, it is finished with white braided fringe.
