Origin
In northern Afghanistan, where the artisans are experts in Mamluk-style patterns, this rug recalls a royal heritage of 15th-century Egypt. A tradition that was originally made in sultans and palaces is now replicated with ancient hand knotting and natural dyes. The rug is a statement and a cultural revival.
Materials
Closed in 100 per cent hand-spun Ghazni woollen, colored with common natural vegetative materials and minerals, the rag provides a deep lasting colour palette. The density of high knots makes the design clear rather than obscure, and durable in the long run. The fibres are ecologically biodegradable without being made of synthetics or treated with any chemicals or dyes, and acquire a beautiful sheen with age.
Design
It is designed with a central medallion encircled with symmetric floral decoration as well as innermost detailing. Starbursts, rosettes and geometric lattices, too, are arranged in an orderly but dynamic composition. The combination of deep navy, ivory, burgundy, and ochre introduces a certain feeling of royal abundance that adds vision, causing the eye to turn inward.
Craftsmanship
Each of the rugs is hand knotted, a fact that cannot be undermined, particularly because it takes months before completion, a fact that depicts precision and the legacy of the Afghan weaving. The knot density is high, and this leads to fine details and maintained texture. This was done quite carefully as the fringe and selvedges are doubled for stability, so that the article would come up to both heirloom and everyday-use standards.
Heritage
This carpet embodies the great art of the Mamluk dynasty, in which Islamic geometry and divine symmetry were the key focus of the design. Mumlook rugs initially existed at the royal courts of Cairo, and today they are woven in Afghanistan in order to keep this visual dialogue. Both works connect history and the present in material, techniques, and beauty.
A tribute to Mamluk legacy—this Mumlook rug brings royal symmetry and refined geometry to your home.
