Origin

This rug has been hand-knotted in the north of Afghanistan, completing a new wave in design with the Mumlook motif, redefined in an abstract way. Modern texture is superimposed on tribal and medallion elements, which show the artistic freedom of the artisan. Indeed, it was the tradition that weaved and unweaved itself into a freeform vivid expression.

Materials

It is hand-spun wool (100 percent Ghazni) and is dyed naturally using natural plant colors. This makes it an anti-environmental rug! The thick pile of the wool provides plush underfoot cushion and, because of lanolin content, stands up against dirt. All-natural fibers will assure that the piece can age gracefully and become rich in time.

Design

Central medallion images are contrasted with abstract, painterly brush strokes in red, emerald, gold and azure. Objects and shapes appear and disappear, creating an impression of an ancient mural. This rather deliberate sense of distress gives a more dramatic and multi-dimensional look to balance symmetry with chaos--just perfect for eclectic, bohemian, or maximalist decor in general.

Craftsmanship

Entirely hand-woven with asymmetrical (Persian) knot, this rug is very highly knotted and careful. These dimmed, brush-stroke sections are not printed over and are done by hand as the weaving proceeds. It has the length to last, with reinforcement of the fringe foundation in the double-finished selvedges. It is a commentary rug that keeps wearing and also admiring.

Heritage
