Origin
This Shaal rug, which is produced by hand in the craftsmen-hill villages of Northern Afghanistan, continues a tradition of tribal weaving prowess. With the patterns of carpets inspired by the nomadic stripes and Persian border ornaments, it succeeds at retaining the originality in the local crafts and at the same time reinventing it to suit the modern household, where people appreciate not only the cultural heritage but also the original aesthetics.
Materials
This rug is made of 100 per cent Ghazni hand-spun wool, which has botanical extract dyes and is soft yet strong. It is made up of rich walnut husk browns, madder reds and indigo blues. It is bio-degradable in full, free of chemicals and is soft, luxurious and a sustainable avenue to long-lasting beauty.
Design
The rug is composed of a peaceful turquoise outer field that has a surrounding of vertical stripes composed of rich browns, deep blues, and warm golds. The stripes are decorated with meandri, vine and flower patterns, and a classical red-and-gold frame accentuates each of them. This colour and pattern combination introduces harmony, animation and depth to the work.
Craftsmanship
All the knots are worked accurately and produce a heavy weave which is beautiful on both sides. The artisan is equipped with hand-bound edges as well as delicate finishing of the fringe. The outcome is a rug that is both aesthetically pleasing in composition and one that will outlive its context and become an heirloom.
Heritage
The inspiration behind this Shaal rug was centuries-old motives of stripe patterns that were popular among Afghan tribal weavers to tell a cultural tale. The vertical lines represent the signs of continuity and protection, and the border represents the unity. These motifs were previously associated with nomadic lives, but today they are a source of history in modern contemporary interiors, offering such concepts as the inscription of value and skilled craftsmanship.
Turquoise elegance meets tribal tradition in this hand-knotted Shaal masterpiece.
