Origin
Handcrafted in the artisan centres of Northern Afghanistan, this Shaal rug combines tribal weaving styles that have centuries of tradition. It has been impacted by Caucasian and Persian patterns of stripes and has a very strong rhythm of its colours and images to reflect the world of nomadic narrators and the stable work.
Materials
The non-backed, natural plant-dyed wool rug is made out of 100 per cent hand-spun Ghazni wool and is thick and deep in colour. Its deep crimson, blue, and gold colour comes by way of walnut husks, madder roots and leaves of indigo. It is naturally soft and durable, but at the same time sustainable, biodegradable, and free of all synthetic dyes.
Design
The pattern is an ornamentation of a series of vertical stripes of tribal design, each different in motif and colour, bordered by an indigo line of rosette and star pattern. The color of deep crimson grounds the composition, and gold, moss, and ivory come together to produce a playful contrast, symmetry, and rhythm throughout the surface of the rug.
Craftsmanship
The details in the rug are also crisp on the back and front due to the finesse displayed in knot density and precision. It has long edges that are stitched together, and its fringes are hand-knotted to make it endure. Each stripe and pattern is stitched carefully with an eye on both strength and handworkmanship; it is both useful and an object of interest and collection.
Heritage
This Shaal rug is a modern tribute to the Afghan tribal art, and this piece captures the language of symbolism of the nomadic weavers. Lines that are geometric convey a feeling of safety, whereas the repetition of motifs indicates oneness and containedness. Every stripe tells a poem of visuality, and transports the cultural history into the present with grace, resourcefulness and significance.
A tapestry of tribal heritage—this Shaal rug’s rhythmic stripes weave color, culture, and craftsmanship into a timeless floor art.
