Origin
This is a handwoven masterpiece, which in Northern Afghanistan, Shaal artisans uphold centuries-old traditions of weaving. Taking its cue from Caucasian and Persian stripe designs, it is geometrically balanced yet has a free-flowing tribal design. The outcome is an entirely culturally-grounded and image-rich floor covering that has a place in either traditional or modern settings.
Materials
It is created in 100 per cent hand-spun Ghazni wool and each fibre is colour-enriched using natural, environment-friendly pigments made of plants, roots and minerals, including madder root, walnut husk and indigo. Such dyes are capable of producing bright and long-enduring colors. It has a dense, soft pile that is chemical-free, biodegradable, and made to last many generations, providing beauty and durability.
Design
Vertical and horizontal bands are alternated with stylized florals and geometric tribal motifs of earthy greens, deep maroons, soft blues, and ivory. The composition is bordered by a deep ruby field, which gives way to a fine, multicolored border. The balance of the warm and cool tones helps to provide the visual level of depth and balance, as well as a timeless quality of appeal.
Craftsmanship
This oriental rug is made of fine knot detail, portraying splendid distinction, visible motifs, and crisp lines. Fringes of hand-knotted edges and reinforced selvedges ensure a structure. Since it is quite large, it assumes a dominating role in any living room, dining or library, yet it maintains the authenticity and prestige of the genuine Afghan hand-knotting techniques.
Heritage
Each stripe has a meaning: fluid lines represent water to bring life and prosperity, and rosettes represent unity and continuity. This art is representative of the nomadic populations' storytelling tradition and can be utilised as a posh decoration piece as well as a cultural object that brings the previous craft and craft pleasure to the modern generation.
Bold ruby elegance meets tribal storytelling in this grand Shaal hand-knotted rug.
