Origin
This handwoven rug was created in the Northern part of Afghanistan by Shaal artisans--master weavers who continue a long tradition of tribal weaving that stretches back a century or more. The striped pattern it takes is inspired by the elements of Caucasian and Persian patterns and combined into a perfectly harmonious pattern that echoes both the historic background and the modern design of the interior.
Materials
The fibers used in its making are of pure hand-spun Ghazni wool dyed using natural pigments sourced from walnut husks, madder root, and pomegranate rind. These environmentally friendly dyes have intense, long-lasting pigments that cannot fade easily. A thick pile of tools is soft to walk on, yet it guarantees years of use in daily commutes.
Design
Its carpet is composed of three striped running patterns of complex tribal motifs, stylized flowers, and rhythmic waves. A contrasting deep rust edge surrounds a warm teal stripe, giving it more depth and contrast. The earthy golds and warm reds, coupled with sky blues, work on the field to create a design that is satisfying and a visual stimulation.
Craftsmanship
The rug is very finely knotted with sharp detail, and this demonstrates the skill of the artisan in sharpness and line focus. Structural strength is achieved by the use of hand-finished fringes and reinforced selvedges. It is large and would fit into a living room area, a dining room, or an office, hence becoming a practical piece and decoration on the floor as well as a representation piece of the culture represented with the carpet.
Heritage
The symbolism of every motif included in the stripes is interesting: zigzag line as running water and life, floral rosette as growth and continuity, and triangular symbols to protect. This Shaal carpet is not a decoration; it is more of a tale that connects modern interiors and the long-lasting tribe storytelling traditions of the nomadic people of Afghanistan.
Heritage stripes meet bold elegance in this hand-knotted Shaal treasure.
