Origin
The piece is a Shekari rug handwoven in the weaving villages in Northern Afghanistan, an area known traditionally as The Tree of Life, representing the growth, harmony, and abundance in the Persian culture. Each branch, bird, and blossom is portrayed with accuracy, many centuries of cultural tale telling in one magnificent textile.
Materials
Woven out of 100 percent hand-spun Ghazni wool, which is highly durable and shiny, and dyed using natural dyes produced by madder root, walnut husk, and pomegranate rind. Such botanical dyes result in rich but earthy coloring agents that cannot fade out easily, making the beauty eco-friendly, which is destined to last generation after generation, but this does not take away the touch of soft and rich.
Design
In the center stands a majestic Tree of Life with its colorful Aviary hosted by peacocks, herons, cranes, and songbirds. A deeply forest-green background is compensated with golden leaves and dainty blossoms. The interaction of the colors ochre, crimson, ivory, and sky blue brings motion and depth, catching the eye over the elaborate story of this rug.
Craftsmanship
Each section is just rightly proportioned and with a fine knot count that gives crisp, detailed motifs. Hand-knotted fringes and reinforced selvedges make it quite durable. Its mid-to-large size works effortlessly in living rooms, more formal areas, or as a centerpiece beneath statement furniture, and it brings the air of Afghan museum-quality craftsmanship into a practical decorative jewel.
Heritage
The Tree of Life on the Shekari rug is reminiscent of ancient Persian garden rugs, in which water, plants, and life represented eternal paradise. The peacocks represent timelessness, the cranes denote long life, and the blossoming trees predict rebirth. Such a carpet is not just a piece of decor; it is an artifact woven in history, with a part of the Afghan soul reflected in it.
A forest of life and beauty—handwoven into a Shekari heirloom.
