Origin

This rug originated in the talented weaving centres of Northern Afghanistan, where Sultani tradition is alive. Its patterns are symbolic of growth and harmony and are based on Persian floral artwork. These motifs are shared between generations of the nomadic artisans, such that in every knot, cultural identity, narration, and history are held.

Materials

Made of hand-spun Ghazni wool, which was known as resilient yet soft enough to run its own length, it is both aesthetically and practically satisfying. It gains its deep black ground and flower-bright highlights through natural dyes; these natural dyes include indigo, walnut husk and pomegranate skin. The rug is fully chemical-free, sustainable, eco-friendly, and one that will mature gracefully over the course of decades.

Design

The runner consists of an expansive midnight black ground with ornate floral bouquets and vining plants, and is framed by multi-level boundaries of geometric and leafy designs. Turquoise, veau, saffron, and rose accents give a racy contrast. Due to its shape and symmetry, it was suited to hallways, stairways and smaller spaces that needed beauty as well as depth.

Craftsmanship

Any of the knots are hand-tied with extreme accuracy to create clean motifs and a plush but soft pile. Fine knotting with strong selvedge edges assures durability. On the underside, there is even, even knotting, an indication of the skill of the master weavers. This rug gracefully combines everyday functionality with a virtuoso workmanship which has come to be called an heirloom product.
