Origin
This Sultani runner is woven in Northern Afghanistan in the ancient workshops and continues centuries of artistic tradition provoked by the Persian flower patterns. All the elements used in the design express harmony and regeneration of nature. Woven by herding peoples, the rug carries a continuous cultural tradition that sees more to weaving than utility, but a form of heritage, narration of stories and a sense of tradition.
Materials
Capable of lending the runner a natural sheen, softness, and durability, this runner is crafted in 100% hand spun Ghazni wool. Its dyes are of vegetal origin; the dyes are made of walnut husks, pomegranate rind and indigo to give deep contrasts with the black field. The rug is entirely chemical-free and actually biodegradable, and is eco-friendly and can be cherished as it ages.
Design
The central field exhibits a vertical liquid of geometricized flowers, vines, and leafy decoration to generate a graceful feel of unbroken design throughout its length. A floral contrast of intense color in turquoise, ivory, saffron and green earth tones emerge against the black background. The piece is framed in geometrical overlapping borders, giving the composition the aspect of symmetry combined with a rich exuberance that is perfect in narrow interiors.
Craftsmanship
Each knot is carefully knotted to come up with crisp and long-lasting motifs that have a dense and luxuriant pile. The mastery of the artisans can be seen in strong selvedge edges, accurate fringe finishing and a smooth back side. This runner can be described as functional and heirloom in nature as it can withstand daily wear and tear yet still retaining its masterpiece artistry.
Heritage
Flower and vine patterns of Sultani weaving symbolize fertility and abundance, and the logical recurrence of nature. Traditionally during the periods of life milestones, such rugs have been presented as blessings of sorts. In the contemporary household they are still cultural heirlooms--useful art linked to contemporary living environments and centuries old technics and symbolism.
