Origin

This carpet is created by master weavers in Northern Afghanistan whose craft of hand-knotting is then handed down through generations. It has a tree-of-life design, which has symbolic meaning in the Persian culture, such as continuation, renewal, and protection. Every knot symbolises loyalty and patience, and this runner will turn out not only a cultural monument but also a beautiful interior item in contemporary households.

Materials

The runner is made of 100 per cent hand-spun Ghazni wool, which is naturally strong and warm with a large extent of resilience. Deeper teal, earthy terracotta and dark blue colours are created using organic dyes made with madder root, walnut husk and indigo. The eco-conscious process is not only used to produce rich, long-lasting colours, but also the wool pile ensures comfort underfoot and graceful ageing.

Design

The field of runner has symmetrical medallions surrounded by climbing flowering vines, exploding sprays and tree-of-life motives. The contrasts form between the dark blue ground and the teal, terracotta, ivory, and indigo colours bring attention. There are several guard borders, soft green and turquoise, to make it sophisticated. The long shape of wrapping has the effect of adding rhythm, symmetry and classical grace to hallways.

Craftsmanship

Strictly hand-knotted, the detail is noted with the expertise of Afghan workmanship. The stabilised density in knots makes them durable, as well as sharp bordering and located selvedges give them strength. The ends are finished with fringe, and structure and tradition are not lost.
