Origin

This TreeOfLife rug was woven in tribal weaving shops of Northern Afghanistan and, as such, presents the traditions of storytelling within Gabbeh and Persian weaving. Even its cause and symbolic motifs of trees, deer, goats, and birds transport the ether of nomadic culture, linking the world of nature and human imagination. Every knot makes contact with an ancient tradition of meaning.

Materials

This rug is supported by hand-spun Ghazni wool, which is durable as well as soft and luxurious. The deep crimson, ivory and green colouring with natural dyes madder root, walnut husk and indigo is applied to make the tones deep and very durable. Not just chemical-free but also sustainable and biodegradable, it is nature-friendly as much as it is design-friendly.

Design

The rug has a strong crimson background that is filled with graphic animals: symbolising growth and transformation, the Tree of Life. The stylised trees emerge elegantly with some small animals and birds surrounding them, which portrays harmony between man and nature. The design has highlights with golden, ivory and emerald to bring out the colour in that design, and the combination of balanced symmetrical design brings a serene and majestic aspect to that design.

Craftsmanship

Bundle strung by hand and tightly packed to superb definition, each motif stays sharp and lasting. It is well hand-finished with secure selvedge edges and carefully hand-finished fringe that supports the artisan quality.
