Origin
This Waziri rug has been made by a master weaver in Northern Afghanistan and is connected with tribal design tradition reaching back into the nomadic heritage. The audacious medallions and geometrical patterns speak of centuries of steppe symbolism, with every knot referring to cultural memory. The rug not only decorates but also stores the tribe's legacy in a colourful way.
Materials
The rug is made of 100 per cent Ghazni wool, which has been hand-spun, creating its unparalleled durability and natural radiance. Organic pigments, dyed with madder to provide reds, indigo bringing blues and walnut providing browns, the palette is not only fade-proof, but also eco-perfect. After a period of time, the wool becomes soft, adding comfort and depth, and staying ethical, sustainable and biodegradable.
Design
Within the golden sand ground, it has a grid of octagonal emerald, navy, rust, and ivory medallions with angular tribal borders. Details of small arrow and flower anti-images are put in negative spaces, because they represent movement and vitality. The organised and dynamic form represents the Waziri aesthetics, putting the emphasis on order and rhythmic assertiveness.
Craftsmanship
All the knots are put together with a meticulous touch that results in acute geometry and intense colours. The weave is very dense, being resilient underfoot, and the fringes are done by hand, giving an authentic feel. On the back side, a perfect profile can be seen, evidence of superb handicraft. Not only is this rug functional, it is a collectable, as this rug is as good an example of Afghan workmanship as can be found.
Heritage
The Waziri motifs represent protection, fertility and prosperity and have been inherited through generations of artisans. Such rugs are historically found in nomad tents and thus bring some beauty alongside meaning in the tribal travels. Owning this rug keeps up that legacy--providing the power of steppe background and tale-telling craft to contemporary homes.
